Admissions Procedures

The D.E. admission decision is made by the IE graduate admission committee. Please contact the Graduate Advisor, Dr. Curry, for specific questions about requirements for the IE program.

For admission to the program, the student must meet the following requirements:

  1. The general requirements for admission to the College of Graduate Studies.
  2. Hold a bachelor's degree in a field of engineering or related discipline (math, physics, computer science or other related discipline). Individuals with Master's degrees have fewer preparatory courses. Individuals without engineering degrees might have additional coursework to build their understanding of the engineering field.
  3. Applicants to the D.E. program possessing a master’s degree are recommended. For the B.S. to D.E., the GRE is required in all cases, except when the student receives their B.S. from an ABET accredited program.

For more information, please see our Admissions information website.

The admission standards for the DE are significantly higher than the Masters of Science, Master of Engineering, and Master of Engineering Management. To be accepted in the DE program, applicants should have a strong academic background based on GPA and ranking of prior schools. Past research experience and skills with research tools (programming, optimization, statistics) are also considered.  Applicants should have a good GRE score typically above 308. Outstanding applicants can be admitted to the program without a master's degree. The department tries to provide TA/RA position for all full-time accepted students.

Degree Requirements

  • 27 semester hours of D.E. dissertation preparatory courses for students with a Master’s degree at the time of admission or 45 semester hours of D.E. dissertation preparatory courses for students with a B.S. degree at the time of admission. The preparation includes completion of one semester of ENGR 6320, Justification of Engineering Project. The same course can not be taken at the 5000 and 6000 level.
  • Completion of a minimum of 4 semester hours of Professional Seminar (ENGR 6110).
  • Completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of D.E. dissertation courses (ENGR 6603 and ENGR 6604) and satisfactory defense of D.E. dissertation.
  • Hours: 61 with masters degree / 79 without masters degree
