2023 Events Archive

The Center for Resiliency host a monthly Brown Bag lecture series for all members of the Southeast Texas community to provide service, outreach and education for multi-disaster resilience in the Gulf Coast region.

The purpose of the series is to highlight the current research of our faculty and students. This is a great opportunity to network with other students and faculty who have similar interest and career paths as well as present your own research and knowledge.

Could you survive a month living in poverty?

In partnership with the Missouri Community Action, LIT and LU Social Work, the Center for Resiliency sponsors a interactive learning opportunity to experience the challenges faced by those living in poverty. Social Work professionals receive 5 CEU's.

The Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) is an interactive, immersive opportunity that provides participants with a firsthand experience of the challenges and limitations faced by individuals living in poverty. Each participant takes on the identity of a person experiencing poverty and then works together as a family to navigate a simulated month in their assigned roles. At the conclusion of the simulation, participants debrief as a group to discuss the daily struggles and difficult decisions they faced during the experience. CAPS helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions, encouraging a more compassionate and informed perspective on poverty.
