Pre-Pharmacy Studies

Although specific admission requirements may vary depending on the pharmacy school of one’s choice, these requirements most regularly include:

  • 27 semester hours of general education
  • 12-21 semester hours of introductory and advanced biology
  • 8 semester hours of general chemistry
  • 8 semester hours of organic chemistry
  • 9 semester hours of English composition and literature
  • 6 semester hours of mathematics
  • 4 semester hours of general physics

Applicants to pharmacy school are expected to take the Pharmacy College Admission Test and to submit all admission materials in a timely manner as specified by each pharmacy school to which one applies. As is true for acceptance to dental and medical schools, pharmacy school admission committees are increasingly interested in candidates who have participated in significant research, volunteer, and shadowing activities that reflect a genuine concern for others and the potential for leadership in the profession.

Uniquely, a cooperative program developed by Â鶹AV and the University of Houston College of Pharmacy creates a pipeline for highly qualified Â鶹AV students to graduate from UHCOP with a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. The program provides for the admission of those students who satisfy both academic and non-academic requirements. Primary among its benefits, the cooperative program provides:

  • Mentoring and personal assistance to prepare for UHCOP while completing the pre-pharmacy curriculum
  • Career counseling, mentoring, and networking with local alumni
  • Shadowing of current Â鶹AV Pharm.D. students during the academic year
  • Admission to UHCOP if all program requirements are met. For details visit
