The Â鶹AV Bachelor of Science Degree in Family Studies – Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Certification will prepare you for teaching FCS in Texas, complete with teacher certification through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. If you choose a career outside of teaching, this degree will also set you up for positions that require a broad range of education and experience.
By virtue of your substantial exposure to each of the major areas of study within the discipline, (i.e., nutrition, fashion retailing and merchandising, interior design, hospitality administration and family studies), as a graduate, you will bring to your job a broad scope of knowledge regarding service and how to elevate individuals' and families' quality of life.

Microcomputers: The objective of this course is to teach students to solve realistic problems using the most readily available off-the-shelf general applications software: word processing, spreadsheets and database systems. The course familiarizes the student with Internet resources. Students learn the basic components of computer systems and networks.
Textiles: A study of textile components (fibers, yarns, fabrics and finishes), the interrelationships among these components, and their impact on product performance; emphasis on consumer selection and the care of fabrics. Physical and chemical properties of textiles will also be explored.
Apparel Analysis & Evaluation: Analysis of construction quality, aesthetic properties and design components of apparel. Apparel industry regulations and evaluation skills for mass produced apparel emphasized.
Senior Seminar Professional Development: Leadership, personal style, and protocol for working as a professional. Assessment of individual strengths, areas for improvement, and interpersonal relationship skills. Includes the development and nature of the profession, entry into the profession, exploration of career options, and opportunities for graduate study. Requires development of a personal portfolio.
Consumer Economics: Consumer principles and rational decision-making skills for coping with consumer issues affecting families and individuals.
This program is designed to create Texas teachers of family and consumer sciences. However, the general degree may also be a stepping stone into graduate study or a variety of careers in business, healthcare or social service, to name a few.
